New Zealand is a plantsman's paradise, especially for rock garden plants. Many of these subalpine and alpine plants are endemic to New Zealand, limited to only a few locations and therefore very rare. They are often a challenge to grow in cultivation because of their extreme natural growing conditions. But their beauty makes it very hard for the rock garden plant collector not to try them in the garden. Some of these photographs were taken during a holiday I made in the Southland of New Zealand in September and October of 2010. Another part of these photographs are made by Doug Logan, a good friend of mine and a specialist on New Zealand alpine plants who has been studying these plants in the wild for many years now.
